We have invested in state-of-the-art equipment at our South Ogden, UT office to help make the sinus lift procedure fast and successful.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lift refers to a bone graft procedure performed when there is bone loss on the patient's maxilla.

The maxilla is the part where the molar teeth are placed.

The sinus system comprises several parts, with the maxillary sinuses around the cheek being the closest to the teeth. You might experience toothache when you have a bad cold or congestion since the sinus pressure transfers to the tooth's root in the upper jaw.

When a patient needs a dental implant in the upper jaw but the bone at the implant site is too thin or weak, this can sometimes necessitate what is called a "sinus lift," which carefully moves the sinus out of the way and adds a bone graft to the area.

Why Is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

If you need a dental implant procedure to replace missing teeth, a sinus lift will have to be carried out when the bone height is insufficient in the mouth's premolar and upper molar regions.

Large maxillary sinus or bone losses due to teeth loss are some reasons you may lack bone.

Depending on the site of the implant and the specific conditions of the case, our periodontists will provide one of two different types of sinus lift procedures.

Sinus Lift Procedure

There are different sinus lift approaches. The bone graft materials will determine the right sinus lift method, the amount of bone you have in the jaw, and much more.

The first step in receiving anesthesia is to help numb the area and ensure you do not experience pain during the surgery.

The incision is then made on the pack part of the gum tissue exposing the bone. A small area of the bone is cut with caution to avoid cutting sinus membranes.

The cut portion of the bone is lifted to raise the membrane.

The bone graft material is then applied to the lifted area and sutures to close the gum incisions.

Lateral Window Sinus Lift

In this procedure, the periodontist will carefully cut a small "window" into the bone of the upper jaw, exposing the outer membrane of the sinus just behind it.

With precision, the membrane is detached from the outer wall of the sinus cavity and it is pushed upward. The area below the sinus is filled with bone grafts and the incision is closed up.

This method is usually used when there is less than 5mm of bone at the intended implant site.

Indirect Sinus Lift

For the indirect method, a small hole is drilled in the crest of the gums at the site of the future dental implant almost all the way through the bone.

When just a thin layer of bone is left under the sinus floor, this last layer is carefully cracked, and granulated bone (or another grafting material) is inserted through this break to gently lift up the sinus with rising bone material, which hardens and is integrated into the natural bone of the jaw.

Indirect sinus lifts are recommended when there is at least 6mm of bone at the implant site.
